SAINT JOHN OF COMPOSTELA – patron of Spain (seated)
Inside the Cathedral of Compostela on the Pòrtico de la Gloria, a masterpiece in Roman style by Maestro Mateo (1168 - 1188), Saint John is depicted seated with his stick in his left hand and a scroll in his right bearing the words; ‘Misit me Dominus’ (‘I was sent by God’). He is clothed according to Roman custom and demonstrates a fierce pride in announcing the love of Christ.
