Joseph, putative father of Jesus, was a carpenter descendant of David. When the miraculous conception by Mary, his betrothed, took place, he was doubtful of the event and considered leaving her. He accepted his role after the mystery had been explained to him in dream. The Slaying of the Innocents planned by King Herod caused him to flee to Egypt with Mary and the Child to return only on the death of the king. The last mention of Joseph in the Gospel is on the occasion of his Easter Pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It is believed that he died before Jesus’ public preaching. In the western world Joseph is venerated from about the beginning of the Middle Ages. In 1479 his day was included in the roman breviary.
